Winter gifts?

Winter gifts?

books for long, dark nights

Waiting for the quiet feathers,

That drift through the trees,

That smother the world into silence.

Waiting, still waiting, for the snow.

Waiting for the snow, Gordon MacLellan

As the nights are drawing in and our thoughts turn to the lingering darkness and a need for something to keep us busy other than sitting knitting socks for sheep, and there are gifts to pursue for Christmas, Midwinter, Yule and All, Creeping Toad would like to offer a few extra treats for you, for a loved one or maybe for someone whose complacency you would simply like to disturb….

Books

Sacred Animals: creative, reflective and adventurous ways of exploring relationships with the animal world (or apply similar ideas to trees, other plants, fungi and stones: it’s up to you!) Here are ways of building meditations, composing poems, making outfits, masks, tokens and totems, £15.06 *

Waiting for the Snow:
my most recent collection of poems: words for dark evenings and  desire for open spaces, for the northern seas on the rocks of Orkney, for ravens watching the world go by and for the kelpie who waits in dark still poems

50 pages, A5, £5.97

There are cracks in the pavement

Where the bears live,

Feeding on the careless words we drop

Between one step and the next.

Whisper along the Wind: or you can listen and be drawn into stillness by the beautiful music of Gifts from Crows and words from myself: Orchards are here and the dark night of Vigil and the sharp Beaks of Raven

Baba Yaga: tales of an old witch: a small collection celebrating one of the wildest of the wild witches from her house that follows you through the crowded woods to herself polishing the rust off her teeth, £4.36

Old stones and ancient bones: an older collection poems with words from hollow hills, of bones and skulls and the satyr who waits on the Dancing Lawns

£5.00 direct from me

Inside a house,

Inside a wood,

Inside a beck,

Inside a bog,

Inside a crag,

Inside a world,

Inside a doll.

Books, postcards and the Creativity Conference

Animals, stories, tree people and books

Autumn blows in with storm winds and rain - at least here in the hills of Britain’s peak District

A special welcome to the blog to participants at the Creativity Conference:

….we delve into the fundamental principles and methodologies behind creative thinking. Our approach empowers attendees to nurture and expand their creative endeavors, whatever they may be.

I am there among a treasure hoard of speakers. If you follow the link above, you can still register and join in on some of this year’s sessions - and you can access the library of this year’s discussions that you might have missed!

Baba Yaga (here by Bilibin)
flies in for a visit

I join the Conference as a storyteller talking about finding stories and relaxing into the inspiration the world around us offer…I’m also (hopefully) having fun talking about conversations with fairytale characters, stepping past the hype and the stereotypes and reaching for the story of the character themself

Out of those sessions, I hope people might be interested in my current publications

WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?

How do we refresh, renew, replenish, revitalise our connections with the animal worlds?

Or how do we simply recognise our relationships with the world around us?

Sacred Animals is a book about inspiration and exploration, inviting readers to reflect upon their relationships with animals and explore that relationship creatively and practically. Written from an animist perspective (Gordon is an animist, an artist and a zoologist), this is a book about personal spirituality that encourages readers to find their own language to express their connections with animals. Activities are designed to challenge and be flexible: from simply sitting and watching the world around us to writing our own poems, designing our own ceremonies, or committing to action on behalf of particular species, Sacred Animals offers no ready-made totem-packages or guaranteed spells, prayers or enchantments.

Readers can adapt activities to suit their own philosophical stance. Those animist principles of shared consciousness and ceremony run through the book but there is no assumption that this should be how the reader uses the book: activities should suit you whether you follow a pagan practice, belong to an organised religion or encounter the world through a faith-free stance. It would work just as well for the animal-lover who simply wants to look at different ways of expressing their feelings for the animals they care about.

Sacred Animals asks us to look at the animals we care about, to deepen those relationships, and to find new ways of supporting those animals and through our connections with them, the wider world we all live in. A book that mixes creativity, spirituality and environmental commitment. A book to keep you busy….
